New house color

The house was painted in time for Ellie's birthday party, but it wasn't quite done at that point. The front door and some trim was still needing to be finished up. We had a lot of rain which had affected progress this spring.

When they started painting it was a section under the eaves in the shade and I thought the color was fine. When they got more paint on it and it was in the sun I went out to look and couldn't believe it was the same color we chose. Aaron asked me if I looked at the paint chip outside in the sun. Well, no. I looked at it inside in the dark, under fluorescent lighting.

I will admit I was not too crazy about the color it was turning out to be. However we got good feedback from our realtor, and a lady who came to pick up something from freecycle, and a couple of other people so we just left it. We didn't want to pay to have him repaint it another color, since I did such a great job choosing this color - I honestly don't trust myself to pick a house color ever again.

We are glad it's done! It sure needed a fresh coat.

Girl stuff

This is Matt's entry for the Fair this year, we call it "Pigtails."

It has been truly fascinating to watch my kids develop traits as they grow. Ellie is all girl. She loves shoes, talking on the phone, shopping... you name it. Levi loves engines and airplanes and trucks and legos. While they cross over to some degree and enjoy each other's interests, they definitely have inborn gender stereotypes.

Some of my favorite moments are when Matt calls me at work and puts Ellie on the phone, and in her little voice she tells me about her day and that she loves me. She loves to talk on the phone. I am sure her grandparents can't wait for the day that they can understand everything she says! :)

Little photographer

It is amazing to me how much kids understand about technology. Ellie loves the camera. She likes to carry it around and take photos, and look at those photos on the viewfinder. Of course this always makes us nervous since it is our SLR.

May 15 - Pony Party

For Ellie's birthday this year I planned a pony theme. Cindy took us to the western store to get her some pink cowgirl boots. I found her this bandana outfit on eBay and also found cowboy hats for both her and Levi. I was really worried about the weather because we had rain all night with a forecast of more rain for today. About an hour before the party the clouds cleared out and we had perfect weather for her party.

Following with the theme, we had a pony balloon out front. I was so excited to have finally found one that matched the real pony I had arranged for! I also made up grab bags for all the kids consisting of butter-mints with a pony on the wrapper, pony stickers, farm animal tattoos, and bubbles.

Levi greeted the guests as they arrived, in his cowboy duds.

The kids were so excited to see the pony. I had arranged for Ginger the pony to join us, but she got sore feet. Thankfully it worked out for us to have Kittee bring her 1/2 sister Jasmine and she was wonderful. Thank you Kittee!

Ellie enjoyed every minute of it and asked for ride after ride.

Levi enjoyed riding also, once he got over his initial hesitation. All the kids took turns and munched on snacks of apple slices and carrot sticks.

Natalie was fearless!

After a little while Ellie was comfortable enough to ride without me holding onto her. She even trotted a couple steps!

It was so precious to see her bond with Jasmine. She was thrilled to have a pony in the backyard.

We had vegeburgers for lunch and many people contributed to the meal. It was all wonderful. I am so fortunate to have such good friends and family to help make this day special.

My friend Ruth baked and decorated the cakes and they turned out awesome!

I had planned a couple games in addition to the pony rides. One of them was a stick horse race, and at the end everyone got a sugar cube.

Jasmine was a trooper but eventually she tired out and it was time for her to go home. Ellie was glued to her all day and was sad to see her heading out.

She went back to the trailer to say one last goodbye.

After Jasmine left we ate cake and opened presents. Ellie wanted the chocolate cake. Levi chose the palomino (confetti flavor).

We played pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey and it started sprinkling. The rain had held off long enough.

It was a fun and busy day. I am glad I chose the right theme for this little girl. :) (But really, how can you go wrong with girls and horses?)

Garden!

Last weekend we put in our garden, as is our family tradition for Mother's Day. It was perfect weather for gardening and we rented a roto-tiller to get the soil ready for planting. Some of my transplants had been hardened off already but most had not.

Fast-forward to a week later. I am very pleased with how the bean plants are recovering. Most of the other plants are doing well although I lost a tomato and squash plant.

The kids had fun helping us - mostly they just really love to dig in the dirt!

Crazy kids

I have a couple of crazy kids.

Ellie was all snuggled in watching television when Matt interrupted her with the camera.

Not sure what this photo was about, but it's cute so I'm sharing it.

May 14 - Birthday Sabbath

My brother Wes, wife Joanie and daughter Natalie came to town for the weekend to help celebrate Ellie's second birthday.

We went to Eastgate Sabbath School, the girls enjoyed the program and got to put flowers on their heads.

Since it was her birthday she sat up front and we sang songs to her and she got to blow out a candle and open a present. She chose a whale washcloth.

We did our best to get a photo of the cousins together while they were all dressed up - but kids being kids... this is the best shot we got.

After lunch my brother tossed Ellie up in the air and she seemed to really enjoy that.

Levi found a roly poly and was quite proud of it. He loves to investigate bugs. Watch them, hold them (if it's safe) and asks lots of questions.

Saturday night we played with one of Ellie's new toys. This one is from Great-grandpa Don and you build up all the pieces and then send a ball down and it goes through all the sections and some are loops and some have moving parts. It is fun and the kids really enjoyed trying new sections. As you can see, they built it quite tall!

May 11 - Ellie is two!

Ellie got some cute clothes from Grandma Susan for her birthday and here is one of those outfits.

We went to the Iceburg for dinner and brought it home for a tailgate party!

House progress

House is being primered, looking better. We're still agonizing over what color to paint it next.
